Director Statement

Kate Raney Artist Statement
My background as an artist is in experimental film and video art with an emphasis on animation. I employ a mixture of 2-D hand rendered artwork with live-action film/video and animation. Whether using footage, script, or genre, I typically use appropriation to deconstruct visual language, narrative, or performance. My work abstracts images to move toward the hidden meanings of text and character. I seek to make images of beauty with a playfulness to them, but also reframe and critique our relationship to and assumptions about the image.

Jeremy Bessoff Artist Statement
My primary artistic practice is a mixture of digital and traditional animation combined to evoke a tactile, visual experience within an experimental context. I reference Brechtian distancing affect and mask theater to disrupt the traditional narrative conventions of film generating a sense of interactivity. The viewer is invited to become a detached active investigator rather than a passive emotional spectator. Much like the Surrealists, I employ elements of the dérive with my editing technique. I free the audience from their own spatial prejudice and concrete notions of linear space-time and invite viewers to loose themselves in an ever-shifting, psychogeographic landscape. I encourage the audience to generate their own map to follow through the investigation of my animation.
